Wetland Construction

During 2006, Grobbel Environmental & Planning designed and built a three tiered, constructed wetland at the Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) along Suttons Bay on Lake Michigan. The system is designed to store and treat up to an 100-year rain event, and treats stormwater runoff from the Village of Suttons Bay through a grassed waterway, leading to two constructed wetland basins. Each basin was planted with native emergent and submergent plant species. Basin one is shallow, and replicates a wet meadow wetland type. Basin two has open water continuously  for dabbling duck and other wildlife habitat. A self-guided tour with beautiful booklet illustrated by Traverse City artist Glenn Wolf fare available to introduce visitors to the green treatment system and wetland ecology. Come see the "green-up" spring of 2007!

Biotechnical Shoreline Stabilization

A biotechnical shorel stabilization was also completed along nearly 300 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline a the ISEA complex. Native plant, coconut coir and small diameter rip rap were combined to armour the shoreline with native plants and materials.comprehensive assessment of the entire area potentially affected by development, or proposed as a mitigation or disposal site. An ecological assessment includes an evaluation of both the biotic and abiotic components of the subject area. Typically the animal and plant species near the impacted area are determined, and important habitat is noted. The quality and sustainability of these features is assessed to provide a holistic picture of the potentially impacted natural environment. Furthermore, potential impacts to sensitive species and important habitat are analyzed to assess negative affects of proposed development, or disposal of material.

Wetland Restoration

In the Spring of 2008, Grobbel Environmental & Planning reconstructed  800 ft of wetlands along the Natural Rivers portion of the upper Manistee River in Kalkaska County.  The project included the restoration of  native riparian wetlands including shrub/scrub and emergent  wetland vegetation.  Grobbel Environmental also designed and constructed a biotechnical river bank stabilization at this location.

Also in Spring of 2008 Grobbel Environmental & Planning designed and installed a wetland restoration project on the Lake Leelanau Narrows. The Design incorporated a strip of native riparian species, a strip of native shrubs planted through the pre-existing lawn to prevent washout, and a strip of wildflowers. This project will restore this particular area to a state that it has not seen for over 100 years.
